  Document ANSI-3953 E. coli: An Overview

By Josh Payne. E. coli are bacteria found naturally in the environment. While there are many harmless E. coli strains, certain strains such as E. coli O157:H7 are considered pathogenic and capable of infecting humans. By following recommended food preparation and personal hygienic practices, individuals can reduce their risk of becoming infected. This fact sheet was revised from BAE-1524.Revised August 2016.
